Florida Blue is the 2013 National Senior Health & Fitness Day state sponsor Wednesday, May 29, 2013, 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. @ Florida Blue Centers
Wednesday, May 29, 2013, marks the 20th anniversary of the annual National Senior Health & Fitness Day. This inspiring event is celebrated all over the country on the last Wednesday in May. The goal is to promote the importance of regular physical activity and to showcase what local organizations are doing to improve the health and fitness of older adults in their communities. Seniors are encouraged to visit their nearest Florida Blue Center and take part in a day of fun and healthy information. Bring a friend and enjoy complimentary classes, healthy snacks and water. A feel-good smorgasbord of programs chock-full of benefits, it’s definitely worth looking into in your area. Most of those persuaded to participate the first time come back year after year. They find the programs consistently energizing, educational, focused on their interests, and all-in-all a good time!
One repeat participant said that she had gone to her first Senior Health and Fitness Day expecting to be told to take a walk three times per week. Instead, she said, “My life was saved by ballroom dancing!” The cha-cha may not be the solution for everyone, but it was one of a variety of ideas offered at the event she attended. Creativity and ingenious ideas abound at each event, making them a wonderful place to discover new activities, foods and friends that make you happy, and also happen to be great for you.
But, if you think a bunch of overly enthusiastic people might make you look silly, don’t worry—the pressure’s off. All activities and programs are non-competitive. Instead, facilitators focus on the positives and how to help you reach your personal health goals. For example, you may find them mentioning that you’ll feel better if you eat better, that your energy level will increase as you become more active, and that your mood will improve as you widen your social circle.
Florida Blue Center’s health and fitness events give you an excellent opportunity to make, renew, and revitalize your commitment to living healthier. They also give you the chance to connect with others, to build a support system for making healthy lifestyle choices, feel better and have fun. After all, it’s a lot easier to set goals and plan for reaching them when you can do so with likeminded friends.
National Senior Health & Fitness Day is organized as a public-private partnership by the Mature Market Resource Center, a national information clearinghouse for the older adult market.
